Many people feel dread when they hear they need root canal therapy. New Hamburg patients have nothing to worry about, though. The dentists of the New Hamburg dental group are experienced in this procedure and will make it as painless as possible.

Why Is Root Canal Therapy Necessary?

The root of your tooth is filled with a soft tissue called pulp. This can become infected due to decay, an injury, or multiple procedures on the same tooth. Root canal therapy is necessary to remove this infected pulp and stop the infection from spreading.

Signs You Need Root Canal Therapy

Symptoms of an infection include pain, sensitivity to hot or cold foods and beverages, a discoloured tooth, and tenderness. In some cases, there are no symptoms, which is why regular checkups are crucial.

What Does Root Canal Therapy Involve?

At your first visit, your dentist will examine the tooth, possibly with an X-ray, to see if you need root canal therapy. If a root canal is necessary, you will receive a local anesthetic. Your dentist will then place a dental dam around the tooth, just like with a filling.

Next, your dentist will drill a hole into the tooth. This provides access to the pulp chamber and root canals. Your dentist will remove the infected pulp and then shape the space to be able to fill it with a rubber-like material. You will receive a temporary filling to seal your tooth.

You will need to return to your clinic at a later date to receive a permanent restoration. This will be a crown or filling. If your tooth is unable to support this restoration, you will first need a post inside your tooth.

If you are experiencing any discomfort, book an appointment with your dentist to see if you need root canal therapy. Early treatment will improve your chances of saving the tooth.
